Our colleague Rayma Suprani was victim of “ communicational guerrilla”

Rayma Suprani´s report – English

As the report by Ipys-Venezuela says correctly, I was victim, on 24th January, 2011 of a repeated harassment via Twitter through the account ( profile) @LinaNRonUPV, which belongs to the official politician Lina Ron. There were , appart from the ones mentioned by Ipys, another deprecatory and menacing phrases .

Though it´s quite frequent, from the Venezuelan Government , to do that, officially called “ Communicational guerrilla” , by sending off menaces and insulting messages , protected by the anonymity of social nets , this time I suffered a physical and moral menace , without Lina Ron denying the bad use of her Twitter account .
Mrs Lina Ron does'nt have any official charge in the government , but she is a well known politic figure related to the present regime . Unfortunately , this person has headed violent actions towards media and social communicators , including damage to installations and people, done by a well trained and organized group of antisocial people , well identified by their emblems and mottos , and protected by the government , which guarantees them total impunity.

As I said before, Venezuelan Government has instituted an explicit policy of menacing through the web of “ communicational guerrilla” which joins several other mechanisms used by the state in order to limit the free expression of ideas and to obtain what they call · communicational hegemony· and conscience monopoly. In these digital times, limiting the freedom of espression and opinion is a matter of finding new ways to obtain that goal.

The objective, besides repression of freedom of expression and opinion, is to get everybody to be self censored and scared. So, I find myself in the situation in which the editorial graphic expression has turned into a high risk activity that can bring me unpredictable consequences . My case is not the only one : the Colegio Nacional de Periodistas ( National Journalists College) keep a wide record of colleagues who have presented documents denouncing menaces, indicents , physical and psychological violence , which shows a general situation of hostility and harassment towards everyone who works in the profession and towards the right of information and opinion .

I insist on the fact that the new ways of digital communication are generating inedit forms of censorship which are quite different , though they look for the same results , to the classic ones used previously by another totalitarian governments in the continent from Cuba to Pinochet in Chile .
It is for this reason that the attention of social communicators should sharpen and focus into perceiving this new ways of censorship and coercion .
Venezuelan Government is very sensitive to the variation of its international image and therefore it is also sensitive to the pression and vigilance kept by the ones who defend the freedom of conscience in the world .
I am very thankful to Ipys-Venezuela, to International Freedom of Expression Exchange and its director Robert Russell, and to the colleague cartoonist Ana Von Rebeur because of the attention and diligence given to follow this situation.

Rayma, (and Ana)

First, thank you so much for this brave and heroic report and for the energy and courage you show as a cartoonist. You are what makes cartooning such a very dangerous craft, if it's done right. I wish more cartoonists had your courage.

Second, can I post your report on our web site?

Third, is there a single cartoon or series of cartoons that made Lina Ron so angry? what is the story behind the cartoon, might make a better story.
Please let me know asap.

Ana and Bro

Thanks for your words towards my work , a critical eye on the power was never an easy task for human kind .
Of course you can publish my note on the web or wherever you want , I assume it as very exact of what is going on in Venezuela, in my opinion.

This story was launched by the publication of the cartoon I send here referring to the sending of an optic fiber cable by Venezuela to Cuba, in order to inprove the web services in the Caribean island . This is a metaphor for Venezuelans of the paradox of the subordinated relation Chávez has got with Fidel ( Castro) , in which the comunist regime of Castro and the military regime of Chavez feed each other over the rights of the people they supposedly represent . In Cuba, people have not access to Internet , which is highly expensive and restricted, and in Venezuela some quarters and urbanizations don´t have telephone service because they are out of order ... but they are giving telephone service in Cuba.
This metaphor of the cable in my cartoon is that I show it like the umbilical cord of Chávez with Fidel.
That made Mrs . Ron very angry and unleashed the demons .
